Carpenter Street Shut Down in Keene After Water Main Break

Keene city crews were on Carpenter Street Friday repairing a water main break that forced the closure of the road to through traffic.

The shutdown affects the stretch between Church Street and Kingsbury Street, and the City of Keene Public Works Department is telling drivers to steer clear of the area and find another route until work is completed.

Officials have not said what caused the failure, whether customers nearby have lost water service, or when the street is likely to reopen.

The break happened in a part of the city where aging water lines have already been flagged as a problem. Keene has been investing in a larger water-main rehabilitation effort intended to limit future breaks, reduce water loss and improve pressure and reliability across the system.

This is the latest in a series of recent water-line problems in Keene. In April, a break on Water Street closed that road between Grove Street and Carpenter Street and left some nearby customers with low pressure or no water at all. That incident came after a major rupture in July 2025 that affected a broader area, cut water pressure and prompted a temporary boil-water advisory.
