Driver arrested after Chesterfield collision leaves several badly hurt

Police said the vehicles struck each other and then overturned before stopping off the roadway.

A two-vehicle crash at the junction of Routes 9 and 63 on Thursday afternoon ended with multiple serious injuries, a road closure and one arrest.

Police said the wreck was reported at about 1 p.m. and brought Chesterfield police along with fire crews from Chesterfield, Spofford, Keene and Westmoreland to the scene. When responders arrived, both vehicles had left the roadway and one had come to rest on its side, with occupants trapped inside.

According to the initial investigation, a 2026 Chevy Equinox traveling north on Route 63 entered Route 9 after the driver, identified as Kyle Roy, 38, of Athol, Mass., did not stop at a stop sign. The Chevy moved into the path of a 2023 Mazda CX-50 driven by Sarah Winn, 43, of Chesterfield. Police said the vehicles struck each other and then overturned before stopping off the roadway.

Emergency crews removed four people from the vehicles. Police said all four suffered serious injuries. The Mazda driver and a juvenile passenger were taken by Rescue, Inc. to Cheshire Medical Center, and Roy was also transported for treatment. A landing area was established at the Spofford Fire Department on Pontiac Drive for a DHART helicopter response involving an occupant of the Chevy Equinox.

Roy was later arrested on charges of aggravated driving while intoxicated, reckless conduct with a deadly weapon and vehicular assault. He is due in court at a later date.

The scene also drew assistance from the New Hampshire State Police, the Cheshire County Sheriff’s Office and the Hinsdale Police Department. Route traffic was blocked for about an hour while Guyette’s Towing & Repair cleared the vehicles.
