Police say there was no criminal activity after a report of someone carrying what looked like a gun on Old Brattleboro Road earlier today.
The Hinsdale Police Department said Cheshire County Dispatch received a call about a male walking along the road with a firearm in hand. The report later indicated the person went into a yard while still holding the weapon at his side, which led several agencies to respond to the area as a precaution.
Officers eventually found the individual and made contact with him. After checking the situation, police determined the object was a BB gun and that no offense had taken place. The roadway was reopened soon afterward.
In a follow-up message, police reminded families to be careful with BB guns and pellet guns, especially in places where others may see them. The department also noted that these items can look like real handguns, even at close range, and said people should use caution and good judgment when carrying or using them in public.
