The EPA announced plans to speed up New Hampshire’s petition to terminate its vehicle inspection initiative.

The Environmental Protection Agency announced plans to speed up the process regarding New Hampshire’s petition to terminate its vehicle inspection initiative. A proposed decision is expected by early summer, with a final determination anticipated by year's end.

Last year, Governor Kelly Ayotte enacted a law that eliminated mandatory vehicle inspections, but the contractor responsible for executing these inspections has initiated legal action against the state. They argue that federal approval is necessary for dismantling the program.

After a federal judge ruled in favor of the contractor, New Hampshire was instructed to maintain the existing program. In response, the state has temporarily paused the vehicle inspection initiative and sought a stay on the judicial ruling.

The contractor, Gordon-Darby, has called for the court to find New Hampshire in contempt due to its failure to adhere to the judge's ruling.
