Fish and Game Encourages Blaze Orange for Fall Outdoor Trips

The use of blaze orange has been linked to fewer hunting-related incidents around the country

As hunting seasons begin across New Hampshire, state wildlife officials are asking anyone spending time in the woods this fall to dress in blaze orange to help lower the chance of accidents.

A fluorescent orange hat, vest or jacket can make people much easier to see against autumn leaves, which helps reduce the possibility of hikers or hunters being mistaken for wildlife. New Hampshire Fish and Game says that added visibility is especially important during the busiest weeks of the season.

Josh Mackay, who oversees the Hunter Education Program for the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department, said the use of blaze orange has been linked to fewer hunting-related incidents around the country. He also pointed to two basic firearm safety habits for hunters: keeping the muzzle pointed in a safe direction and making sure a target is clearly identified, along with whatever is beyond it, before firing.

Officials said the state’s hunter safety record remains strong, and credited much of that to the Hunter Education program. Hunter education has been required for all hunters in New Hampshire since the 1970s.

The department is also urging non-hunters to take precautions. Hikers are being told to wear bright orange clothing and stay on marked trails while traveling through wooded areas this season.

More hiking safety guidance is available through Hike Safe, while New Hampshire hunting season dates, regulations and firearm safety information can be found on the Fish and Game Department’s hunting pages.
