Grand jury declines to file charges in Walpole gas station shooting

Walpole Police Chief Justin Sanctuary said that it appeared to be an isolated event and that the public was not believed to be at risk.

A grand jury has decided not to bring an indictment against a man accused in a Dec. 17 shooting at a Walpole gas station.

The person who was hit in the incident suffered a gunshot wound to the torso and was flown to a hospital by helicopter. Walpole Police Chief Justin Sanctuary said after the shooting that it appeared to be an isolated event and that the public was not believed to be at risk.

Police said the violence was thought to have begun after a roadway-related dispute. According to the department’s account, the confrontation between the two men continued into the parking lot, where one shot was fired.

In the criminal justice system, a grand jury reviews evidence and decides whether it is strong enough to support felony charges. It does not determine guilt or innocence. By declining to indict, the panel found there was not enough evidence to proceed with a felony case.
