A red-tailed hawk injured along Route 12 in North Walpole received help from passing motorists on the late morning of Monday, June 29, after the bird was seen struggling by the roadside.
The hawk was secured in a box by people who stopped to assist before the Walpole Police Department was called. Officers then took the bird to the Winchester Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, where it was evaluated and placed under care.
Police said the hawk appears to have suffered an injury to its right eye, though no broken bones were found. Its recovery is expected to take several weeks before it can be returned to the wild in North Walpole.
The Walpole Police Department thanked the motorists who intervened and also acknowledged Deb Gode of the Winchester Wildlife Rehabilitation Center for treating the bird.
