New Hampshire attorney general presses FCC for tougher action on robocalls

Attorneys general want the FCC to impose stronger limits and verify who is actually purchasing these numbers.

The New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office is backing a multistate effort aimed at reducing robocalls, joining 48 attorneys general in urging federal regulators to make it harder for scammers to use legitimate phone numbers.

The coalition says the problem has become more difficult for consumers to spot because bad actors increasingly obtain real numbers and use them to disguise automated scam calls. Attorneys general want the FCC to impose stronger limits on access to those numbers and require phone number resellers to verify who is actually purchasing them.

That concern is shared by some consumers who say spam calls are becoming more sophisticated. Kathy Stone, visiting New Hampshire from Louisiana, said call-blocking tools are helpful but do not stop every attempt, as scammers keep finding new ways through.
