Peterborough shooting leaves Jack Hutchings dead and off-duty officer hospitalized, officials say

Officials said the officer is still being treated and his current condition has not been made public.

Authorities in New Hampshire are investigating a deadly Sunday night event in Peterborough that left Jack Hutchings, 24, of Peterborough dead and an off-duty police officer with stab wounds.

According to the Attorney General’s Office, officers responding to a disturbance at a home on Grove Street found Hutchings dead from what appeared to be gunshot injuries. Inside the residence, investigators also found a second man with multiple stab wounds. He was taken to a hospital and later identified as an off-duty Peterborough police officer, though his name has not been released.

Officials said the officer is still being treated, and his current condition has not been made public.

The Attorney General’s Office said an autopsy has been completed for Hutchings, but the official cause and manner of death are still being withheld while next of kin are notified.

Investigators have said the confrontation appears to have started as an altercation between two neighbors outside their homes. The house where the incident occurred is located directly across from the Peterborough Police Department.

The case remains active, and authorities are also examining whether the person who shot Hutchings may have acted in self-defense.
