Troy clerk post changes hands after Hopkins departure

The town will see a shift in its office leadership after Christina Hopkins resigned from her role as town clerk and tax collector before the end of her term.

Town Administrator Jeremy Bourgeois said Hopkins ended her service on Sept. 1 after sending in her resignation earlier this month. A copy of the letter showed that she emailed it to Bourgeois and the selectboard on Aug. 13, but it did not explain her reasons for leaving.

Hopkins had first been named interim town clerk and tax collector in 2023 and later won election to a three-year term in 2024. According to the town’s website, she had been set for reelection in 2027. She is married to Curtis Hopkins, a former longtime selectboard member who lost his reelection race in March.

Kayla Cashman, who has been serving as deputy town clerk and sits on the town’s budget committee, is stepping into the clerk position right away, Bourgeois said.

The clerk’s office is responsible for matters such as vehicle registrations, vital records and coordinating elections with the town moderator and supervisors of the checklist, Bourgeois said.

Hopkins’ departure was one of two resignations from Troy town government in August. Her daughter, Sarah Lashua, left her job as finance and benefits coordinator on Aug. 19 to move into another career field, according to Bourgeois.

During March town meeting, a town official noted that staff were putting in long hours to keep municipal operations running. Neither Christina Hopkins nor Lashua could be reached for comment on Monday.
