The Associated Press declared Malloy the winner less than an hour after polls closed.
Gerald Malloy secured the Vermont Republican nomination for Congress on Tuesday night, setting up a November matchup with Democratic incumbent Congresswoman Becca Balint, who advanced without opposition in her own primary.
The Associated Press declared Malloy the winner less than an hour after polls closed, when about 10% of the vote had been counted. At that point, he was ahead of Mark Coester 76%-21%.
Malloy, a West Point graduate, has a background in military service and later worked for defense contractors. He relocated to Vermont in 2020 and previously ran for Senate two years ago without success.
Balint, in a statement, said she intends to make the general election campaign focus on costs, including housing, health care, and groceries, while also defending Social Security, Medicare, and democratic rights.
