Okemo Mountain adds snowmaking upgrades before winter

The resort is making upgrades and replacing 15 diesel fuel compressors with electric models.

Okemo Mountain Resort is heading into the next ski season with a multimillion-dollar overhaul aimed at improving its snowmaking system.

The work centers on the summit Pump House, where the resort is making upgrades, and on replacing 15 diesel fuel compressors with electric models. Okemo is also planning updates to some of its 700 low-energy snow guns spread across the mountain, a change officials say should help open more terrain during the season.

General manager Bruce Schmidt said the improvements should give the resort more flexibility after storms and other weather disruptions, and could allow terrain parks and additional features to come online sooner.

He said the mountain is not expected to open earlier than usual, but the new equipment should make it possible to produce snow in warmer conditions.
